Throughout its history, the feminist movement has become accustomed to facing turning points: ups and downs; progress and regress; successes and failures; setbacks and accomplishments, even if slowly achieved. At each point, however, there was a price to pay; from accusations associating the liberation of Women with immorality and debauchery, to feminists losing years of their lives in prison or under house arrest in exchange for the rights they demanded.

The independent human rights community in Egypt is at unprecedented risk. The recent imposition of travel bans, asset freezes as well as the interrogation of NGO staff by investigative judges illustrate a clear plan to prosecute the entire independent human rights movement. If the prosecution goes ahead, it will lead to the closure of these NGOs and the sentencing of their workers, including on charges that carry life sentences in prison.

Nazra for Feminist Studies announces its inclusion in an official interrogation in the case number 173 for the year 2011, known in the media as the "NGO Foreign Funding" case, that began after the issuance of a report of a fact-finding committee that was formed by a decision from the Ministerial Cabinet on 3 July 2011 around the situation of funding for non-governmental organizations.

This raises several questions regarding the power relations associated with these diverse and overlapping identities. The issue of sexual violence is by nature extremely sensitive.
