The Committee Working on the Amendment of the Laws of the Exercise of Political Rights and the People's Assembly has to Listen to the Demands of Feminist Organizations concerning the Appropriate Electoral System and Take Them into Account

The undersigned to this statement followed the work of the Committee formed pursuant to the decision of the President of the Republic no. 126 for 2014 to draft two decrees to amend some of the provisions of law no. 73 for 1956 to regulate the exercise of political rights ad law no. 38 for 1972 concerning the People's Assembly, in accordance with the provisions of the amended Constitution adopted on the 18th of January 2014.

Sexual harassment and assault against women remain rife, our organisations warn in a report released today, constituting major obstacles to their participation in the political transition of their country. Successive governments have failed to take measures to stop violence against women and such crimes continue to meet with complete impunity.

After meeting with Fact-Finding Commission for the Events of June 30th: Rights Groups Urge the Commission to Expand its Mandate and Seek Technical Support from the UN

The undersigned organizations welcomed the invitation to attend an open dialogue with the 30 June Fact-Finding Commission, affirming the crucial role of independent rights organizations in exposing facts surrounding the human rights violations  committed during the past period. However, the organizations note that they have not received any clear answers to many of the questions they raised during the meeting, and some questions were left unanswered.

Nazra for Feminist Studies held on Tuesday the 4th of February 2014 a workshop in which a number of experts and members of different political parties took part. Participants were people interested in legislative participation and political work of women. They gathered to discuss a proposal by Nazra for Feminist Studies to hold the coming legislative elections using a system that will lead to the parliament including a fair and effective representation of women.

Recommendations to the Independent Fact-Finding Committee Tasked with Investigating the Events that Accompanied 30 June to Ensure its Success and Effectiveness

Nazra for Feminist Studies issued a list of succinct recommendations directed at the independent national fact-finding committee (FFC) tasked with gathering information and evidence regarding the incidents that accompanied 30 June 2013. The FFC was established following the issuing of presidential decree no. 698/2013 by the president of the State and it was subsequently restructured by the issuing of presidential decree no. 4/2014.

The undersigned feminist and human rights organizations have followed up the constitutional amendments to the Constitution of 2012 to which the people has agreed on the 18th of January 2014. These amendments guaranteed appropriate representation of women in legislative councils in the second of paragraph of article 11 which stipulates that "the State shall take the necessary measures to ensure the appropriate representation of women in representative bodies."
