The Fifth Session to Consider the Appeals Against the Asset Freeze and Travel Ban Orders Imposed on Nazra and Mozn Hassan

Statement

14 Feb 2020

Tomorrow, 15 February 2020, Circuit 15 of Cairo Criminal Court in Abdeen looks at an appeal request against an asset freeze order imposed on Nazra for Feminist Studies and its Executive Director Mozn Hassan. The Court also is to look at an appeal against the travel ban order imposed on Mozn Hassan.

The targeting and legal harassment of Nazra and its executive director, Mozn Hassan continues as the Court decided to postpone considering the appeal requests four times since June 2019. Nazra and Mozn Hassan have been persecuted and targeted on the background of Case 173/2011, widely known as "foreign funding" case through an asset freeze order that was placed by a Cairo Elementary Court based on the request of the invistigative judge of Case 173. The decision is unprecedented as Nazra is the only NGO in the case that received an asset freeze order.

This came after Nazra's founder and Executive Director Mozn Hassan was prevented from departing Egypt in June 2016 where she was informed that a travel ban order has been imposed on her.

Mozn Hassan is a feminist activist and a laureate of Charlotte Bunch Award for Women Human Rights in 2013 and of Right Livelihood Award, known as the Alternative Nobel Prize, for her contibution in working on women rights.
