The Future of the Feminist Movement in Egypt - A Meeting with Young Feminist Groups and Initiatives

Nazra for Feminist Studies conducted a meeting entitled: “The Future of the Feminist Movement in Egypt - A Meeting with Young Feminist Groups and Initiatives”, by hosting some of the young feminist groups to talk about the problems they face and their vision for their role as part of the fourth wave of the Egyptian feminist movement, which is not separate from previous waves, where the meeting was conducted at the French Institute in Cairo in its premises in Mounira, within the context of “Free Wave” Campaign, which was launched today commemorating International Women’s Day on 8 March, and will continue over a period of 9 days, ending on the Egyptian Woman’s Day on 16 March 2018.

The meeting commenced with an introduction by Ms. Mozn Hassan, the Founder and Executive Director of Nazra for Feminist Studies, where Dr. Hala Kamal, Associate Professor of Gender Studies at the Department of English, Cairo University, and the Co-Founder of the Women and Memory Forum in Egypt, followed giving a summarized presentation for the history of the four waves of the Egyptian feminist movement, starting from 1919 until now.

The dialogue then moved to representatives of young feminist groups from various Egyptian governorates, namely: Ms. Raneem Afifi, the Editor in Chief of Wala Wogoh Okhra Magazine (She Has Other Faces) in Cairo, Ms. Ayat Osman, Founding Member of Ganoubia Horra Association (Free Southerner) in Aswan, Ms. Rasha ElSherif, Founding Member of Radio Banat Offline (Girls’ Offline Radio) in Ismailia, Ms. Heba ElNemr, one of the Founders of Ontha (Female) Group in Beheira, Ms. Nayera Heshmat, one of the Founders of A Law to Protect Girls from Violence within the Family Group in Cairo, and Ms. Asmaa Basel, Founding Member of Dorek (Your Turn) Group in Qena. The meeting ended by a series of questions from the audience.
